Team8 Tour kicks off in Houston; three-day activity includes donation of sports equipment and presentation of Uncommon Athlete program

HOUSTON – The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, UnitedHealthcare and CBS EcoMedia recently hosted a sports and fitness day and basketball skills competition on Sunday, April 3 at the SpringSpirit Youth Sports and Education Complex as part of its first stop on the Team8 Tour. The project was part of a three-day stay in Houston, which also included a sports equipment donation and presentation of the Uncommon Athlete program.

The Team8 Tour is a national campaign aimed at encouraging young people across the country to make healthy choices, build character and learn critical life lessons that will inspire them to be catalysts for positive social change. In addition to Houston, Team8 Tour will make tour stops in Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago; Jersey City, N.J.; New York City; Denver; and Los Angeles.

“It’s very exciting to officially kick off the Team8 Tour here in Houston, and we could not be more proud to be alongside UnitedHealthcare and CBS EcoMedia,” said Steve Salem, president of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. “This is a unique opportunity for us to make a difference for our youth for years to come, not just here in Houston, but across the country.”

As part of the sports and fitness day, staff and approximately 75 volunteers from the Ripken Foundation, UnitedHealthcare and CBS EcoMedia provided the facility with a newly built outdoor basketball court, finished walking path, freshly painted picnic tables, outdoor enhancements and landscaping. The walking path and landscaping were made possible thanks to generous material donations from Greenseen and Vulcan Materials Company.

As part of the sports and fitness day, youth members from the SpringSpirit Youth Sports and Education Complex participated in a basketball skills competition, led by CBS Sports Network’s Pete Gillen and Danny Granger. The kids then took to the complex’s turf field for additional activities, including X, led by Ripken Foundation staff.

”We are grateful for the opportunity to kick off the Team8 Tour in Houston with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and CBS EcoMedia. We look forward to inspiring youth across the country to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others throughout the course of the Team8 Tour,” said Dave Milich, CEO, UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual, South Texas.

Yesterday, representatives from the Ripken Foundation, UnitedHealthcare and CBS EcoMedia visited the Langham Creek YMCA to provide equipment donations to youth registered for the Miracle League, including batting gloves and an Under Armour sack pack. Tomorrow, representatives from the Ripken Foundation will visit Langham Creek High School to present the Uncommon Athlete program, which aims to motivate and empower young athletes to be leaders, both on and off the field.
