The United States has many reasons to be thankful for George Washington’s leadership, not the least of which is the nation’s oldest, most storied law enforcement agency – the United States Marshals Service. The US Marshals came in to existence thanks to the Judiciary Act of 1789, enabling thousands of men and women to serve our nation with honor ever since.
“Senate Bill Number One of the First Session of the First Congress became, after lengthy and heated debate, the Judiciary Act of September 24, 1789. The Act provided a charter for the federal judicial system by specifying the jurisdiction and powers of the district and circuit courts, and the qualifications and authority of federal judges, district attorneys, court clerks, U.S. Marshals, and Deputy Marshals.” (www.usmarshals.gov)
While the US Marshals duties have shifted with the priorities of the time, the service is perhaps best known for the incredible ability of thousands of Deputy US Marshals to track, find, and capture thousands of fugitives of justice each year. The US Marshals are unique in the fact that they can track their subjects worldwide. From Arkansas to Abu Dhabi – the Marshals Service will deliver justice to those who seek to escape.
The men and women of the US Marshals Service are similar to many of the law enforcement heroes who risk their lives each day for the safety and security of the American people. Yet, hundreds of Deputy US Marshals are different. The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation is honored to have the incredible support of Deputy US Marshals around the country as part of our Badges for Baseball program. These Deputies not only risk their lives serving warrants and protecting our federal courts, they also give their time as mentors to young people that need a helping hand.
The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation has been gifted an incredible partnership with the US Marshals Service here in Baltimore, thanks to the visionary leadership of US Marshal Johnny Hughes. Marshal Hughes, along with the tireless efforts of Deputy US Marshal Rich Snyder and Deputy US Marshal Cassie Rhodes, have given the gift of mentorship to hundreds of young people.
