More Than a Game: Empowering Youth Through the Nike RBI Initiative

Jul 01, 2025

What better way to kick off the summer than with the launch of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and MLB’s Nike RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities) program’s latest initiative – a bold step toward transforming youth baseball and softball to ensure a brighter and more inclusive future.

This initiative serves as a signal of what’s possible when sports become a force for good, shaping our future leaders by unlocking their greatest potential. By bringing free instructional leagues to underserved communities, this initiative can help bridge the opportunity gap that often prevents inner-city youth from thriving in a structured athletic environment. MLB/Nike/CRSF Instructional League program acts as a steppingstone, not just for athletic success, but a gateway to growth in school, career, and personal development through leadership, teamwork, and character-building on the field. Through these valuable experiences, the youth we serve may blossom into the best versions of themselves.

A coach does a whole lot more than just teach you how to play. They help with your confidence and set you in the right direction.” – Cal Ripken, Jr., co-founder of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation.

These Instructional Leagues will support 30 different youth-serving organizations across 14 states and will expand access to the game, empowering the next generation to step up to the plate. In 2024, youth from our Instructional Leagues played organized team sports in over 200 cities while impacting over 100,000 student athletes.

With the initiative's goals in mind, a cash grant, camp and clinic opportunities, and essential equipment will be provided to every participating site to enhance the impact of the program. Long-term, the MLB/Nike/CRSF initiative creates lasting change by expanding access to youth sports, building character, and fostering academic and career readiness. By investing in underserved communities and local organizations, the program supports inclusive talent development, stronger community ties, and a sustainable foundation for youth success on and off the field.

Tamika Bell, Batting Babes’ head coach at the James Mosher Baseball League, an Instructional League program partner from Baltimore City, says, “Cal Ripken, Jr.’s encouragement has an amazing way of empowering young players,” adding “it makes the kids feel like I can do this,” reassuring them that their talent and dreams are valid and within reach.
