Icebreakers: Getting to Know Each Other

Apr 30, 2014

Icebreakers are a great tool for people to get more comfortable with one another. In group settings, it is especially hard for kids to open up to one another. We believe in celebrating the individual, as every kid is different and it is important to let them be heard. This icebreaker does just that, and the kids have fun!

Candy Introductions:
Group Size: 10-30
Length of Activity: 5 - 10 minutes
Goal: A game that helps kids learn new facts about each other
What You Need: You will need packs of candy, enough for each person to have up to 5 pieces.  Candy ideas include jelly beans, skittles, gummy bears or M&M’s.

How to Play:

·         Pass around the candy and have each kid choose anywhere from 1 to 5 pieces of candy. Please tell them not to eat candy yet.

·         Once they pick, you will tell them what each candy color represents.

·         Write on the board the following: (If you do not have the above colors, change to match the candy you have)

·         Red – Favorite hobbies

·         Green – Favorite food

·         Blue – If you could go any place in the world where would it be? Why?

·         Yellow – Dream job

·         Orange – Wildcard (tell us anything about yourself)

·         Have each kid take a turn introducing themselves, saying their name followed by one fact for each piece of candy they have.

Variations:

·         If you want to go a healthier route, you can use different fruits or vegetables. For example:

·         Strawberries (Red) – Favorite hobbies

·         Blueberries (Blue) – Favorite place in world

·         Banana (Yellow) – Dream job

·         Oranges (Orange) - Wildcard

·         You can also change types of questions for each color. There are plenty of examples of icebreaker questions. Click here:  https://sao.nd.edu/studentgroups/groupresources/halls/fyo/FunGames.pdf
